What is FSSAI License?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the central food regulatory body established under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, every person or entity that manufactures, processes, stores, distributes, or sells food for human consumption in India must hold a valid FSSAI Registration or License.
The FSSAI license number — a unique 14-digit identification number — must be printed on every food product label and displayed at your business premises. It signals to consumers, retailers, and authorities that your food business has been verified for compliance with India's food safety standards.
Who needs FSSAI registration? Every food business operator (FBO) — restaurants, cloud kitchens, home bakers, tiffin services, packaged food manufacturers, food importers, exporters, caterers, food retailers, dairy businesses, sweet shops, and even online home chefs selling on Instagram or Zomato.
Operating without FSSAI registration is a criminal offence under Section 63 of the FSS Act — punishable by fine up to ₹5 lakh. Additionally, e-commerce platforms (Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon, Flipkart) require a valid FSSAI number to list any food product or restaurant.
